Update on November 27, 2021: Many excellent proposals were received, from which seven were selected for commissioning and publication. Works will be published thoughout this winter and all of 2022.
Helsinki Nature is a multimedia project about the rich nature in Finland’s capital city. It explores and asks how local nature is connected to global questions of climate change and biodiversity. Helsinki Nature encourages residents to celebrate local nature and enables them with tools and knowledge to affect its protection – on a personal level through lifestyle and through the political process of decision-making and planning.
Helsinki Nature is now holding an Autumn Open Call for creative works on the above themes. Your creative work might be, for example, a written story or article, photography series, video work, poem(s), set of illustrations, or comic. Both individual and group submissions are very welcome.
Between six and 10 works will be commissioned during the Autumn Open Call. Accepted works will be published on the Helsinki Nature website and shared on social media throughout this and next year.
Helsinki Nature is guided by intersectional feminism, decolonization, nonoppression, and deep ecology. We hope to receive proposals from people of diverse genders, language, culture, and other minorities, and a varied age group. Proposals must be sent in English or Finnish. Creative written works may be in English, any of the Sámi languages, Finnish, or Swedish.
Helsinki Nature is prepared to pay fees of 300 - 700 €, including all possibly relevant taxes and related costs. Payment is possible by invoice only. This requires that you bill from your own business, use a billing service, or are a member of a cooperative that bills for you; an employment relationship is unfortunately not possible.
Please send your proposal (including fee requirement) and a possible sample(s) of your work to hello at helsinkinature dot fi by October 31, 2021 at 23.59. Include in your email's subject line "Autumn Open Call 2021". Decisions will be made and communicated by November 15, 2021.
